    IT dept-Nokia tax case: Delhi HC seeks more details from Nokia

    During an earlier hearing, the I-T department had informed the high court that Nokia India's tax liability is over Rs 6,500 crore. Thereafter, in its reply to Nokia's plea, for unfreezing of its assets in India, the I-T department has said that Nokia India and Nokia Corporation owe it Rs 21,153 crore as total tax liability (existing and anticipated), including penalty during a seven-year period from 2006-2013.     Delhi High Court stays Rs 411 crore tax demand on Nokia

    The Delhi High Court today put on hold the Income Tax department's order for recovery of over Rs 411 crore outstanding tax from Nokia India Sales for the assessment year 2014-15. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Najmi Waziri issued the direction on Nokia's plea challenging the assessing officer's March 9 interim order for recovery of 33 percent of outstanding taxes which came to more than Rs 411 crore.     The ongoing Rs 10,000-crore tax dispute between the Indian government and Nokia will not have any bearing on sales of Nokia brand phones through new entity HMD Global, Indian Cellular Association National President Pankaj Mohindroo today said. "Tax demand is an independent issue which the government of India and Nokia are trying to resolve amicably.     Nokia invokes India-Finland bilateral treaty to solve tax row

    With tax authorities pressing with over Rs 21,000 crore in unpaid dues, Finnish telecom major Nokia has invoked the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (BIPA) India has with Finland to resolve the dispute. Nokia late month wrote to Prime Minister invoking dispute settlement clause in the India-Finland BIPA to settle the row that had led to its Chennai plant being left out of the over $7.2 billion deal with Microsoft. The treaty provides for amicable conciliation proceedings and arbitration under local and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). More →
