Lenovo has launched the world’s most advanced 55-inch TV, the K91 which is powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at the Consumer Electronic Show 2012, in Las Vegas. Apart from ICS the TV boasts of a pretty powerful 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. For the sake of usability Lenovo has equipped the K91 TV with advanced voice-recognition algorithms, a 5-megapixel camera for video interactions via facial recognition and a remote control, which incorporates a touch pad, a 5-way d-pad and a motion sensor.

Even in terms of display technology the K91 is no slouch as Lenovo boasts of a 3D FPR, flicker free LED backlit, full HD IPS panel with 240Hz refresh rate. Lenovo has boosted the native ICS experience with their Sandwich UI that unites traditional TV with Video on demand (VOD) services via custom apps. Other impressive features of the device include 802.11n Wi-Fi, 8GB storage, SD card support, Access to Android Market and a Lenovo store. It has been reported that the devices shown off at the event had an Chinese interface which could suggest the device would first launch in China before anywhere else, but as of now Lenovo has not announced any pricing or release dates for the K91.

Multi-thousand dollar 3D TVs still aren’t terribly impressive in terms of 3D quality though, so expectations aren’t terribly high right now. While 3D gets ironed out, however, 3D-like experiences facilitated by head-tracking technology provide a nifty UI effect that will likely become more popular moving forward.
While devices like the EVO 3D and LG Thrill will bring 3D displays to U.S. smartphones in the near future, we have to say that the glasses-free 3D display technology involved with these small screens has a long way to go before the quality catches up to the hype. While 3D gets ironed out, however, 3D-like experiences facilitated by head-tracking technology provide a nifty UI effect that will likely become more popular moving forward. We’ve seen great head-tracking 3D demos from companies like The Astonishing Tribe — now owned by RIM — and HTC’s Flyer will launch with similar UI goodies. Now, a group of researchers called the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction demonstrate head-tracking 3D effects the iPad 2. Hit the break for a video of the technology in action and feel free to let your mind wander as you imagine all the great use cases for this nifty tech.
