Google has announced a lot of new products at Google I/O and as expected it has also unveiled an update to its Maps. Google maps team has worked from the scratch to give a completely new look to the Maps, which also happens to be the first major design overhaul for the web interface ever since its launch almost eight years back. Google is preparing a Maps app for the iPhone after Apple booted it out from the latest version of its iOS operating system. Google Maps had been the default mapping app for iPhone since its launch in 2007 but Apple decided to go for its own maps solution in iOS 6. We know where that story went. WSJ is claiming that Google is currently giving final touches to its Maps app for iOS before it submits it to the App Store for Apple’s approval. (more…)Google+

Google today announced it has rolled out turn-by-turn voice navigation in India as well as live traffic updates in Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad. Google is all set to release voice-based turn-by-turn navigation in India, considering Google India has posted a video demoing the same. So far Google Maps provided passive navigation service with no voice commands. The update has not gone live yet as our Android smartphones still show “Navigation is not available for this location” error but we can expect it to go live at any moment. Google Maps now has schedules for over 1 million public transit stops covering nearly 500 cities in the world. Some of these cities include Tokyo, New York, Sydney and London. For India, Google Maps now more importantly has schedules for Delhi Metro Rail, Chennai MRTS, Bangalore MTC and Kolkata Metro. All these schedules are being pushed to the Google Maps app for Android via an update today. (more…)Google+

An updated version of Google Maps is now available on the Google Play store. The new version of Google Maps is compatible with devices running on Android 3.2 and upwards (no love for Gingerbread, it seems) and enables offline navigation support. The update also mentions detailed maps with 3D buildings and turn-by-turn voice navigation but these features don’t seem to be available for India, yet. (more…)Google+

Google today announced it is bringing offline maps support to Android smartphones at its “Next dimension of Google Maps” event. The feature will let users download maps of specific areas and use them even when the phone is not connected to the Internet. (more…)Google+
