iFixit cracks open the iPad Air 2, finds smaller battery and hard to repair setup

Apple announced the iPad Air 2 last week and since then it has received mixed reviews with most reviewers calling it the best iPad ever but not good enough to update from last year's iPad Air. The new Air 2 is even thinner and packs in Apple’s latest and most powerful A8X mobile processor. But if you weren’t satisfied with the little information that the company shared in the event, the folks at iFixit tore down the device to see exactly what has changed since the last generation. Apple has developed a custom SIM card for the iPad Air 2 but it won’t work in India

One of the biggest new features of the iPad Air 2 that Apple didn't reveal on stage is a custom nano-SIM card that Apple has developed. The SIM card lets users jump between carriers without having to replace SIM cards. They can simply select the carrier from whom they want a short-term data plan and can even switch carriers later, if they want. Apple has tied up with major US carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint as well as some carriers in the UK. This will come handy especially when the user is traveling internationally, as they can simply choose a carrier and data plan without having to go to a store and get a new SIM card. This facility, however, won't work in India. More →

At an event in its campus at Cupertino, California, Apple’s senior VP of marketing Phil Schiller unveiled the iPad mini 3, the company's third generation mini tablet. He took less than 30 seconds to flip the one slide the company had dedicated for the iPad mini 3 and quickly moved on to other announcements. There was a reason why Schiller, who usually loves going in detail about the hardware improvements and new features didn’t care to spend much time on the new iPad mini 3: the new mini doesn't have much to talk about.
