Console users who own id Software’s famed 2016 release, Doom, would have wanted it to run full strength on their 4K displays. That was only a wish, which the company had said would fulfill back in E3 2107. Publisher Bethesda had announced at E3 2017 that Xbox One X players would be experiencing the game in 4K resolutions soon.

In a recent blog post on its website, the publisher confirmed that Doom is ready to become a “Xbox One X Enhanced” game. And not only that, it has even gone far enough to announce PlayStation 4 Pro support for the game. The update simply talks about 4K support of the game on both Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. The update is now live on both consoles.

Doom has been one of the best games to hit consoles in the recent times, and uses dynamic resolution scaling to keep the frame rates at a consistent level, which is a feat in itself even today. It remains to be seen how the consoles manage to maintain the steady frame rates while on native 4K resolution.

There were a number of teams that examined the resolution scaling technology, and among those Digital Foundry found that Wolfenstein 2, which uses the same game engine and supports PS4 Pro and Xbox One X game, often scaled down the resolution to keep a steady frame rate. PS4 Pro saw the resolutions top out at 1440p, while Xbox One X would sometimes hit the 4K resolution mark.

This can also be corroborated with the fact that textures are often rescaled on Doom when compared to PC for a better performance, and there is video proof which shows a stark difference in the PC, PS4 and Xbox One renders.
