This new ransomware wants you to play PUBG to unlock it

This could just be someone's idea of a prank, though.

Playerunknown's Battlegrounds

There have been a slew of Ransomware attacks in the last couple of years, and some of them turned out to be really bad while others were not that harsh; comical even. And in case the word ransomware triggers alarms in your head (no thanks to WannaCry Ransomware), don’t think of it as an unjustified reaction.

But the newest Ransomware to hit the malware lineup is one that locks down all the files on the affected computer, including photos, music and documents and has an unusual demand to unlock it. Users have to play the game Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds for an hour to be able to unlock their files.

The message reads, “Your files is encrypted by PUBG Ransomware! but don’t worry! It is not hard to unlock it. I don’t want money! Just play PUBG 1Hours!”

The malware was first discovered by MalwareHunterTeam and reported by BleepingComputer. While other Ransomwares have asked users for money  – and at times, a lot of it – to unlock their files, The PUBG Ransomware apparently just wants the user to enjoy a couple of games of PUBG to unlock their data, which seems like a prank in comparison.

It has been reported that people just need to launch the executable file of the PUBG game called “TSLGame.exe” for just a few seconds and not even a hour to get the code to unlock all the data. The “restore code” is provided and upon entering that into the window, the files that have been encrypted with the .PUBG extension gets unlocked.

This malware may not seem that harmful on first glance, but it is yet to be discovered if there is some actual malicious code hidden in the package. And it might even take months to surface and blow up in our face. But for now, it does not seem as serious as other Ransomwares, but just an attempt by someone to make people play PUBG for reasons entirely unknown.
