Nokia to announce Windows Phone 8 smartphones at Nokia World: Bloomberg

Nokia has plans to announce smartphones running on Windows Phone 8 operating system at its annual Nokia World event in Helsinki, which begins on September 5. Bloomberg reports that the handsets would be launched before the year-end holiday shopping season. The timing of the announcement is not surprising as Nokia has traditionally announced its flagship products at Nokia World. However, the big deal would be the timing of the launch considering Samsung would announce the Galaxy Note II a week before and Apple is expected to announce the next iPhone a week after Nokia’s announcement.

An earlier report also suggested that Nokia could announce two Windows Phone devices on September 5 that could be called the Lumia 910 and Lumia 920. Unlike earlier Nokia World events, this year’s event would be a subdued affair purely for Nokia’s carrier and distribution partners. Instead of inviting the world’s media to Helsinki, Nokia is focusing on a number of local events.

Having said that, a recent leak indicated that the first smartphones running Windows Phone 8 will be available only in November. Microsoft is expected to make the operating system ready for release to manufacturing in September with general availability of the devices in November.
