We have received official acknowledgement from RIM about the holster design defect affecting BlackBerry Bold 9900 units that could lead to damaging the phone’s keypad and even ripping off the keys in some cases. The faulty holsters came with a folded edge where the phone’s keys were getting caught and stood a chance of falling off if the user removed the device with excessive force from the holster. The defective holsters were supplied with Bold 9900 units manufactured before November 3. RIM has since changed the design of the holsters. The smartphone vendor is offering an extended warranty of six additional months (18 months in all) to affected users. Read on for the exclusive statement BGR India has received from RIM.

RIM has acknowledged the flaw and is offering a solution for it as well as a free warranty upgrade for another six months, taking the total warranty period of Bold 9900 to up to 18 months.  The problem as stated and acknowledged by RIM is only found to be prevalent in devices manufactured before November 3, 2011. Users of devices manufactured prior to that date can visit BlackBerry service centers for the warranty extension or for repairs. Since November 3, the design of the OEM holster has been changed to avoid any damage to the device or the keys.
