Research firm Gartner is reporting that handset sales in India will reach 251 million by 2013. This will be an increase of 13.5 percent over the 221 million sales mark achieved by the Indian market in 2012. Further, it is expected that the Indian mobile phone market will keep growing and by 2016 it will surpass 326 million units.
While there are over 150 brands competing in India, the majority of the local brands are focused on low-cost handsets, while international brands like Samsung and Nokia continue to hold more than 50 percent of the unit sales market share in 2012.
Manufacturers like ZTE, Micromax, Spice, Karbonn, and Huawei are upping the ante and creeping into price categories dominated by international brands. That said, Samsung continues to dominate in the Indian market at the expense of Nokia. Samsung has increased its share 15 percent in Q1 of 2011 to 49.8 percent of Q2 of 2012. Nokia was exactly in the same position last year, till Samsung overtook it.
