It was raining tablets in the year 2012, which witnessed a huge rise in the uptake of tablets worldwide. A report released by International Data Corporation (IDC), clearly suggests that tablet shipments reached a record total of 52.5 million units worldwide in the fourth quarter of 2012. The tablet market, as a whole, saw a growth of around 75 percent between Q4 2011 to Q4 2012. Apple tops the chart with maximum number of market share in Q4 2012 touching 43.6 percent followed by Samsung that registered 15.1 percent of market shares.
As per the data given in the report, Samsung falls second, only after Apple and is amongst the top 5 vendors to ship the maximum number of tablets. Besides this, Samsung has experienced 263 percent year-on-year growth and increased its market share from approximately 7 percent in Q4 2011 to 15 percent in Q4 2012. It shipped close to 8 million tablets, comprising Android and Windows 8, in the last quarter of 2012 as compared to over 2 million in Q4 2011. Apple, on the other hand, lost about 8 percent of market shares accounting to 43.6 percent of the overall tablet market from 51.7 percent recorded a year back.
With a year over year growth percentage of 75.3 percent recorded in Q4 2012, the tablet market increased to 74.3 percent from the previous quarter, which registered 30.1 million unit shipments. The surge in the overall tablet market is mainly accounted by factors like lower average selling prices (ASPs), a wide range of new product offerings, and increased holiday spending.
Amazon and Barnes & Noble have also registered a sharp increase in their market share during holiday season. While Amazon shipped more than 6 million tablets during the quarter, holding 11.5 percent of the market, with year-over year growth of 26.8 percent; Barnes & Noble shipped close to a million units to reach 1.9 percent share, despite a year-over-year growth rate of -27.7 percent.
