Samsung executive says Galaxy S III launch under review
Earlier today we exclusively reported on a likely May launch for Samsung’s upcoming Android hero device in India, the Galaxy S III. And now comes the story that Samsung is still internally deciding when to officially unveil the device. Samsung’s SVP of Marketing, Younghee Lee, revealed during the company’s quarterly earnings call that the announcement date was still under review. Previously it had been reported that Samsung had cancelled the MWC launch for the Galaxy S III due to the time lag between the international and US launch dates. For the sake of clarity, a product announcement and launch are two different things, the former being the official (and usually global) unveiling of the product, which is then made available to be sold in different countries in a phased manner. It is when to announce the product that is under question. Also, Ms Lee might be one of those rare executives in any world-class brand to acknowledge the existence of unannounced products and comment on its launch details in a cut-throat industry.
In all likelihood, unveiling the device at MWC in February and making it available later in the year might work against Samsung, considering the fact that the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note are still going strong in most markets. If this is the case then Samsung will try and focus the limelight on the Galaxy S III at a dedicated event rather than MWC where the publicity in regard to the device might get lost in the deluge of new products and will also ensure the announcement takes place closer to the actual availability of the device.
