After increasing reports related unauthorized access to Aadhaar data, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) introduced Aadhaar Virtual ID in April, earlier this year. The UIDAI had given a deadline of June 1 to all agencies that undertake Aadhaar authentication, and it was later extended to July 1. Yet, not all agencies have upgraded their systems till date, and the UIDAI has now extended the deadline till August.

This extension gives banks and government departments the much-needed breather, however, till they don’t comply, a penalty of 20 paise per transaction for telecom and e-sign generating companies will be levied starting July 1. However, if these firms comply with the new system till July-end, the charges will be reversed, The Economic Times reports. This deadline extension will also allow transactions related to Aadhaar-enabled payment system (AEPS) to continue for another two months.

“It is imperative that on the basis of level of supervision in authentication ecosystem and the risk assessment, the VID/UID token associated security features should be implemented in certain category of AUAs sooner without any delay,” Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, UIDAI said in a statement.

The move to push the deadline has been welcomed by the stakeholders as companies were facing multiple issues in generating VID numbers using smartphones. “We are facing problem to get customers to generate their virtual Aadhaar numbers from the smartphones, it keeps saying wrong Aadhaar number,” a senior executive of a Mumbai based NBFC told the publication.

Also, there is a general lack of awareness about virtual Aadhaar, how to create one, and its benefits. For those unaware, with Virtual ID, you will no longer need to give your 12-digit Aadhaar number. Instead, you will have to provide your 16-digit virtual identity number (VID).
