Airtel: 220 percent rise in data consumption in India in 2013

Airtel has released its Mobitude data report for 2013, which highlights that data consumption this year alone jumped 220 percent. Data users on smartphones too jumped by 124 percent in 2013, out of which 87 percent of the data traffic was contributed by 3G devices only.

According to the largest Indian carrier by subscribers, this growth in data was mainly due to the increase in smartphone penetration and usage. The report also points out that data consumption on phablets (with 5.5-inch and plus displays) surged by 123 percent in the last two quarters alone, while devices with 3.5-inch displays witnessed a steep fall of 30 percent. Another interesting highlight was that while Android devices sell the most, it was iOS and Windows Phone customers who actually drove data traffic.

On the mobile service front, the company highlights that Mobile TV has witnessed a jump of over 400 percent viewership with traction of over 800 percent over sports and about 200 percent over news channels. Airtel’s Hello Tunes (CRBT) too has recorded 120 million downloads this year. Amongst all the music services, Airtel’s Radio and Karaoke topped the charts.
The company claims that its Re 1 entertainment store, which was introduced this year, too has got a lot of traction and was a hit particularly amongst rural India. The most trending categories on this store were music, photos and games. Also, while on one side images of celebrities like Brinda Parikh, Sherlyn Chopra and Sunny Leone were the most downloaded, Airtel also noticed a trend in religious images downloads on the store. In songs, Phir Mohabbat Karne Chala from Murder2 topped music downloads on the store. As far as the gaming segment is concerned, racing and action games like The Dark Knights Rises, BMW Racing, F1 Cult and Asaphalt 4 ruled this space.
Also, Google was the most visited site in terms of unique users followed by YouTube and Facebook.
On download trends on the Internet in general, Airtel highlights Google’s listing for the year, which showed pornstar and now an aspiring Bollywood actress Sunny Leone to be the most downloaded actor overall, who even managed to topple Shahrukh Khan with 300 percent more downloads. Ditto for celebs like Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandey, Megan Fox, Brea Lynn replaced Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Angelina Jolie among others. On the other hand, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, took over Shahrukh Khan Khan and Salman Khan, who lost out on top two positions for the first time in five years.

Talking about songs, users liked love songs over item numbers this year, and songs like Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 and Saans from Jab Tak Hain Jaan were recorded to be the most downloaded Bollywood Hello Tunes. Besides Hindi and regional songs, English song downloads included Lenny Kravitz’s 1995 hit ‘Can’t get you off my mind’ in song category. Also, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra’s latest number ‘Exotic’ was recorded to be among the Top 5 downloads in the English song category. Gangnam Style too trended in the overall Hello Tune download category

Cricket start Sachin Tendulkar undoubtedly ruled online as well as mobile downloads. Also, Twitter yesterday pointed out that his was the most retweeted tweet of the year.
