Joining the VoLTE bandwagon in India, Airtel now becomes the second telecom operator after Reliance Jio to offer high-definition voice calling network. Airtel 4G VoLTE services kicked off in Mumbai this week and are said to be deployed in other regions in the coming weeks. If you are an Airtel 4G subscriber here are few steps that you would need to perform in order to enable VoLTE on your smartphone.
First off, it is important that you own a 4G VoLTE enabled smartphone. You also need to ensure that you are using a 4G SIM from Airtel. In case you are not sure about 4G support on your SIM card, contact the nearest Airtel customer center to have it checked. If the present SIM turns out to non-4G, you can ask for an upgraded 4G Airel SIM from the representative and they will have it upgraded without any charges.
Check for smartphone compatibility
Presently, Airtel VoLTE services are limited to select a number of smartphones. You can check the compatible smartphone list on Airtel’s official VoLTE page. The list includes most of the popularly used smartphones such as Apple iPhone SE, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung Galaxy J7, Galaxy A8, Galaxy J2 Pro, Galaxy J2 2016, Xiaomi Mi Max Prime, Redmi Note 4, Mi Max, Mi 5, Gionee A1, and Oppo F3 plus. If you have one of the mentioned compatible smartphones, you need to check that it has all the latest updates installed properly from the OEM. To check for latest updates on an Android smartphone head on to Settings > About > System Update. For an iOS smartphone, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
Once you have made the mentioned checks properly, you should now be able to use 4G VoLTE services and experience high-quality voice calls. To check if your smartphone is running 4G VoLTE, go to the Settings> Mobile Network Call> Turn on VoLTE call. For iOS users, the steps differ and they can go to Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Enable 4G > Turn on Voice & Data.
As is the case, most of you might be using the dual-SIM card on smartphones. If you are, then make sure that you plug your Airtel 4G SIM in the primary slot or SIM Slot 1 for the VoLTE services to be enabled. While the system should have preferred network type as 2G/3G/4G set automatically, still you may check for it to be set from Settings > Sim networks > Preferred network type > 4G/3G/2G.
