Airtel grants free Twitter access to its subscribers

Last month we’d reported that Airtel might just offer free Twitter access to its 170 million mobile users in India. Today, India’s top carrier (in terms of user base) has officially announced that its users can now enjoy free access to Twitter sans those explosive data bills. All Airtel users need to do is visit the site mobile.twitter.com through their mobile browsers. And if you happen to have those low-cost phones on which you haven’t activated your GPRS (internet connectivity), worry not as you can still access Twitter. How? You just have to subscribe to SMS updates via a short code 53000. You can follow specific users and their tweets would be delivered to you through text messages. However, the point to be noted here is the tweeting feature is only available for those who have Twitter accounts. So if you haven’t registered, you can only read the tweets of the people who you’re following. Airtel’s free Twitter access offer is valid only till March 1, 2012.
