The browser, called 'Internet: fast, lite and private' on the Google Play Store, isn't compatible with a lot of phones though.

Amazon has silently launched a new ‘lite’ web browser for emerging markets, with the browser visible and downloadable on some smartphones in India to start with. The browser, called ‘Internet: fast, lite and private’ – a generic name intended to aid in searches on the Google Play Store – is visible, but not necessarily downloadable, depending on the device you’re using. The app isn’t very new, but appears to have just been discovered by the public owing to its under-the-radar launch.

For the time being, it’s only available for certain devices in India. We tried to download the app on our smartphones but the app showed as incompatible with all of the devices we tested it with. The app itself is a typical ‘lite’ browser, with a download size of just 2.4MB, and supporting Android smartphones that run on version 5.0 and above. Currently, the app shows 100+ installs with only five ratings on the Google Play Store.

Apart from the small size of the install itself, the app promises privacy by not collecting private data or asking for unnecessary permissions from you on your phone. Additionally, it also offers news and updates on the home page, along with private tabs which do not save the browsing history at the end of the session. Since we weren’t able to install the app, not much else is known about it.

It’s quite possible that the app is still in development with only a preliminary version being released in a soft launch. It also indicates that Amazon is looking to go beyond its traditional market of e-commerce, by developing mainstream apps such as this browser. The ‘lite’ browser is significantly smaller than most other popular browsers available for Android, and will help people with slow or limited internet connectivity or affordable smartphones.
