The latest Android distribution figures are out, and Oreo makes its first appearance. About 0.2 percent of Android smartphones are running Oreo, while Marshmallow — two versions older than Oreo — continues to dominate with a 32 percent share. Given there are nearly two billion active Android devices in the world, that’s an enormous amount of phones still running Marshmallow or Android 6.0. Also rising on the distribution table is Android Nougat, which runs on 17.8 percent of smartphones.

Lollipop is the second-most popular after Marshmallow, with a 27.7 percent share of Android devices. Lollipop 5.1 is nearly five times more popular than Lollipop 5.0. KitKat still runs on close to 15 percent of Android phones, while even older versions like Jellybean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread together account for about 7 percent of the devices. For Oreo to pick up traction, it needs to be rolled out on more phones. At present, only Google’s own Pixel and Nexus phones, along with Sony Xperia Z1 can run Android Oreo. Several flagship smartphones are likely to get the Oreo update by end of the year. Most recently, the OnePlus 5 was spotted running on Android 8.0 beta build. It indicates that the device could soon be getting the newest OS version officially. Until now, Android beta updates were available only on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Besides OnePlus, several devices are said to be receiving Android Oreo through verified and unverified sources. The recently launched Xiaomi Mi A1, which marked the comeback of Google’s Android One, is likely to receive the Oreo update by end of the year. Typically, new Android versions get a boost when they roll out on Samsung’s Galaxy devices. Oreo is likely to reach the Galaxy Note 8, and the Galaxy S8/S8 Plus devices shortly. Additionally, the Galaxy A, Galaxy C, Galaxy J series phones as well as the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge will receive Android Oreo in the coming weeks. A host of budget smartphones from Micromax and Lava to Lenovo and Xiaomi will also be Oreo-capable in a few months. Motorola too has announced on its official blog that its G, X and Z range of phones are poised for the Android Oreo update. More manufacturers to follow!
