Android P, the next version of Google’s mobile operating system, received first public preview at I/O 2018 last month. The update brings a number of changes including a redesigned gesture-based user interface. However, Google seems to be focusing on one key feature – digital wellbeing.

Digital wellbeing is an initiative where Google will limit your screen time based on your own preference. The central feature enabling digital wellbeing is the ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, which has changed with every iteration of Android operating system. Google has been revamping DND with each developer preview of Android P, and the latest iteration bring further alterations including a new notification to warn you of certain differences.

With the first developer preview, Google introduced widespread modifications to the DND setting. The revamp introduced a single mode and offered various options to customize for greater control. With second developer preview, Google included blocking and visual disturbances relating to notifications. With the update, Google introduced an option to completely hide notifications while in DND mode.

The third developer preview further refines these settings and by default, users get less granular control over the blocking of visual disturbances now. It will only give option to choose whether notifications are shown silently or hidden entirely. The advanced menu introduced with DP2 is still there hidden behind as “Enable custom setting” option. The DND menu has also been reorganized to show an alert when there is a new notification.

It is not clear whether the settings introduced with DP3 will be the final version shipping with Android 9.0 later this year. Google and other tech companies are introducing power tools in the form of DND to ensure proper use of their devices and are trying to combat addiction to their devices.
