The Apple iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus brought one key design change, it featured a glass back to enable wireless charging feature. The smartphones can be charged using the standard QI wireless charging pads. And for those who own AirPods, Apple Watch and the latest iPhone, Apple introduced AirPower wireless charging mat in September 2017 to allow users charge all three devices at once.
However, the launched of AirPower wireless charging mat has repeatedly been delayed. Earlier this year, a report hinted that it will be launched sometime in March 2018, but it did not see the light of the day. Now, well-connected reporter Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has claims that Apple aims to release the AirPower “before or in September.”
“Apple didn’t say when in 2018 it would release AirPower, but engineers hoped to launch the charger by June. The aim now is to put it on sale before or in September, according to one of the people. In recent months, some Apple engineers have ramped up testing of the device by using it as their charger at the office, another person said,” the report said.
After the March launch did not happen, Apple was aiming for June launch at WWDC 2018, Gurman wrote in the report. However, AirPower is “taking longer to make due to a series of technical hurdles,” he added. The hurdles include potential for overheating, firmware bugs and complex circuitry the involves multi-device charging functionality.
For those unaware, AirPower is an oval-shaped accessory that uses inductive charging tech to charge multiple Apple devices at the same time. The list of compatible devices include – iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, Apple Watch Series 3 models and the AirPods charging case. Apple is yet to reveal the price of AirPower wireless charging mat.
