Apple announces its own maps in iOS 6, goodbye Google Maps

Apple has finally announced its own app for maps rather than relying on Google Maps. The new maps have Siri integration and will be visible even on the lock screen. Apple is showing off turn-by-turn navigation as well as real-time updates. Of course, kids can ask Siri the eternal question, “Are we there, yet?”

Apple’s maps also have a feature called Flyover, which is basically everything Google had showed last week with 3D maps rendered in real time. Apple says it has these 3D models for cities around the world. Apple will also provide live traffic updates, which it says will be sourced anonymously from other users.

Having said that, we are not sure how many of these features will be actually available in India. For instance, Google Maps don’t provide turn-by-turn voice navigation in India. Apple could score an upset if it manages to do that. We will find out soon enough.
