This year, Apple is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first iPhone. Marking the occasion is a new iPhone, which is quite simply the biggest overhaul to Apple’s flagship smartphone. Along with the upgraded iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, today Apple has launched the ‘iPhone X’ (Pronounced iPhone 10). On stage CEO Tim Cook described it as, “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone.”
In line with all the rumors we have come across so far, the iPhone X boasts a glass sandwich design, which reminds us of the iPhone 4S. It is water and dust resistant, and buyers will be able to choose from silver, and space grey colors. But what will no doubt catch the eye is the edge-to-edge display. In other words there’s no longer a physical Touch ID home button up front. Cook said, “It is all screen. It is beautiful to look at and incredible to hold.”
Apple iPhone X prices
The iPhone X has been launched in two variants – 64GB and 256GB. The 64GB storage variant is priced at $999 (Rs 64,000). Pre-orders for the new iPhone start from October 27. Shipping for the device will start from November 3.
Apple iPhone X specifications, features
The Apple iPhone X flaunts a 5.8-inch Super Retina Display with an OLED panel. The display boasts a resolution of 2436×1125 pixels, and pixel density of 458ppi, which is the highest ever on any iPhone. With no home button, one can simply tap on the screen to wake it up, or just swipe up to go to the home screen.
Under the hood is Apple’s new A11 Bionic processor, which is also powering the new iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus. This new chipset with six-cores is 70 percent faster than the A10 SoC. The accompanying GPU is 30 percent faster than its predecessor.
For photography, the iPhone X is equipped with a dual-camera setup at the back. This includes a pair of 12-megapixel snappers, with ‘larger and faster sensors’, deeper pixels, and f/1.8 and f/2.4 apertures. Along side the camera is a quad-LED TrueTone flash.
In line with the leaks, the absence of a Touch ID sensor means Apple has opted for a new biometric authentication process. Enter Face ID. In simpler words, the phone will scan your face to unlock. For this, Apple uses a TrueDepth camera system. This includes an IR camera, floor illuminator, and a dot projector. If you are worried about privacy, Apple says that the chance someone could unlock your device using Touch ID is 1 in 50,000. As for Face ID, the chances are 1 in a million.
Another talking point of the new iPhone X is called ‘Animoji’. The smartphone’s face-tracking capabilities can be used to create more expressive emoticons. These Animojis will be available on iOS 11. As for battery life, Apple claims the iPhone X battery lasts up to two hours more than the iPhone 7. Not surprisingly, the iPhone X supports wireless charging.
