Apple is reportedly planning to bring a new generation L-shaped batteries with the launch of 2018 iPhone lineup. The iPhone maker has started working with LG Chem, the battery division of the South Korean company to produce a brand new single-cell L-shaped battery.

Acccording to Korean news outlet The Investor, the new L-shaped battery will have increased capacity over the iPhone X’s two-cell L-shaped battery design. The current iPhone X packs a 2,716mAh battery, which is slightly larger than the 2,675mAh rectangular power pack found under the hood of iPhone 8 Plus.

The report claims that a single-cell L-shaped battery with larger capacity and a more efficient A-series chipset could mean the 2018 iPhone X will last longer than current iPhone X. The next-generation 5.8-inch OLED iPhone X could match the iPhone 8 Plus in terms of endurance.

Apple iPhone X has been out for less than three months but the upstream supply chains seem to have already begun working on 2018 models. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is planning three new iPhone models for this year with two of them featuring an OLED display and one model using an LCD screen. Kuo says in addition to the 5.8-inch OLED model, Apple will also introduce a 6.5-inch OLED model which could be called as iPhone X Plus.

The third model is said to feature an LCD display and is seen as the successor to existing iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. All the three iPhone models are expected to sport an edge-to-edge display similar to current iPhone X and include Face ID for facial recognition. However, Kuo’s claims have been disputed by Digitimes which claims Apple is working on two LCD models and two OLED models.

The Taiwanese publication claims that Apple will eventually settle for one OLED model with 6.4-inch or 6.5-inch display and two LCD models with a 5.7-inch or 5.8-inch display and another model with a 6.0-inch or 6.1-inch display. Digitimes has a rather poor record when it comes to predicting Apple’s product lineup but seems certain that Apple will not bring any dramatic changes to its product lineup this year.
