Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit over what is alleged to be defective keyboards on its laptop line-up. The keyboards feature butterfly switches, which were released in 2015. The lawsuit has been filed in the Northern District Court of California in the United States, and primarily hinges on the complaints of two individuals named in the lawsuit. One of those users alleges that their keyboard failed within a month of the purchase.
The lawsuit. reported on by The Outline, further states that Apple “promoted and sold laptops it knew were defective in that they contain a keyboard that is substantially certain to fail prematurely,” and this is the basis of its claim that Apple has continued to sell products it knew to be defective. The keyboard on Macbook Pro 2016 models have been said to be failing twice as much as older models, according to an investigation by AppleInsider. If this is indeed the case, Apple appears to have neglected to address the issue properly.
The plaintiffs in the suit are seeking damages and legal fees, and are separately demanding that Apple admit to the design flaw in the butterfly switch keyboard. Additionally, the company should also cover all costs for fixing or replacing the defective computers. If the suit is admitted, this could be very damaging for Apple, particularly its reputation regarding its laptops.

Apple currently has a strong position in the laptop space that could be heavily eroded. Initially, Apple repair centers claimed that the issues with the keyboard were due to dust getting under the keyboard. However, it’s entirely possible that the lawsuit will be settled out-of-court as well. Whether the keyboards are eventually fixed in a newer model remains to be seen, but for now, exercise some caution when buying a new Apple laptop, particularly if you type a lot.
