At the ongoing Apple Education Event in Chicago, the company introduced a new affordable iPad aimed at young learners. The iPad features a 9.7-inch display, and comes with support for the Apple Pencil. Apple vice president of product marketing, Greg Joswiak, revealed there are 200,000 apps made for education, and that Apple’s most popular iPad is the 9.7-inch model.
In terms of specifications, the new iPad features a 9.7-inch Retina display. It is powered by the A10 fusion chip, and comes with TouchID. The iPad is equipped with a FaceTime HD camera, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with support for 1080p video recording. Apple is promising up to 10 hours of battery life with the new iPad. Other features include up to 300 Mbps LTE support, gyroscope, GPS, and compass.
As for pricing and availability, the new 9.7-inch iPad will be available starting today, while shipping will commence from this week itself. Price of the new iPad is $329 for consumers and $299 for schools. In India, the new cheaper iPad will be priced at Rs 28,000 for the 32GB WiFi only model while the 32GB WiFi+Cellular model will retail for Rs 38,600. It will be available in color choices of silver, space gray and a new gold finish. The Apple Pencil will be sold separately at a price of $99 and in India, it is priced at Rs 7,600.
The new iPad will be made available in regions including India, Russia, Thailand, Turkey and other countries in April, with South Korea and other countries and regions following in May.
