Over the last few days there has been some speculation about an 128 GB iPad model. Today all that speculation goes to dust as Apple has officially gone ahead and launched a 128GB variant of the iPad with Retina display which starts at Rs 49,900 inclusive of VAT for the Wi-Fi only model and Rs 56,900 inclusive of VAT for the cellular model. The device will be available starting February 5.

The new iPad SKU launches with iOS 6.1, which was released to the public last night and apart from the memory bump it is identical to the previous model.

The iPad is powered by the Apple A6X processor and 1GB of RAM. Additionally it has a 9.7-inch Retina Display, a 5-megapixel iSight rear camera and a front-facing camera. It is now available in 16GB, 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants both in cellular and Wi-Fi only models.

The added storage now dispels the notion of restriction in terms of local memory. Many argued that the iPad couldn’t replace a computer just because it does not have adequate local memory. The 128GB model will go someway in dispelling this particular notion.
