Apple Music tops 40 million paid subscribers, elevates Oliver Schusser as new chief

Apple Music narrows gap with Spotify owing to strong growth.

Apple’s music streaming service has reached the 40 million user mark officially. The company announced the achievement in addition to the elevation of Oliver Schusser as the new chief of Apple Music. He will assume the role of vice president of Apple Music & International Content.

Schusser has previously worked on App Store, iTunes’ movies and TV portals,  iBooks, Apple Podcasts, and so on. He has also worked with Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue. Overall, Schusser’s association with the iPhone maker has been for around 14 years.

As reported by Variety, Schusser also played a key role in the acquisition of Shazam by Apple last year. He will continue to lead international teams in 38 different offices. In addition to Schusser’s promotion, Apple marketing executive Tracey Hannelly will also be assuming a new role where she will lead International which services 155 markets.

Apple Music, which debuted three years ago, now boasts over 40 million paid subscribers in 115 countries, as Cue’s memo reveals. The service now boasts 8 million free trails.

According to a recent WSJ report, Apple Music has a growth rate of 5 percent. In comparison, Spotify records just 2 percent growth rate. The report further stated that Apple Music is poised to surpass Spotify by the end of this year in the US. Spotify, in comparison, claims 71 million paid subscribers with a total of 159 million active users.

Apple Music and Spotify are now joined by a lot of other music streaming services which are positioned to tough up the game. E-commerce giant Amazon recently debuted its Prime Music service for its paid members at no extra cost. For a market such as in India, users are bound to grab the service with more benefits.

If we look at the subscription costs, Apple Music costs Rs 120 per month for an individual, Rs 190 per month for a family subscription, and Rs 60 per month for students. Spotify Premium costs $9.99 for a month, which translates to approximately Rs 653, Spotify Family Premium, which costs $14.99 per month, which is around Rs 979. In comparison, Amazon Prime Music is part of the Amazon Prime subscription costing Rs 999 for a year and includes access to Prime Video as well.
