Apple Podcasts, which was launched on iTunes back in 2005, has achieved a new feat of 50-billion all-time downloads and streams. Many of us might think podcasts ‘uncool’ in the video-dominated days of present times but according to Apple, its podcasts is home to over 525,000 ‘active’ shows with over 18.5 million episodes, and content available in over 100 languages.

As Fast Company reports, Apple Podcasts span the globe, covering 155 countries with 29 groupings of localized editorial. If one looks at the 13-year-old history, not only the podcast content has increased, the fanbase too has surged. In 2014, 7 billion podcast downloads were recorded. Two years later, the number increased to 10.5 billion, and last year it surged to 13.7 billion episode downloads and streams across podcasts and iTunes.

In April 2017, Apple rebranded the iTunes Podcasts as ‘Apple Podcasts’, along with a new badge which could help podcasters promote their content. The rebranding was also seen as Apple’s way of refocusing on podcasting. With the new branding, Apple Podcasts also aligns with other products by the iPhone makers such as Apple Music.

Late last year, the company acquired a podcast startup called Pop Up Archive. The platform has developed its own tools for podcast search and discovery.

During its initial days, Apple was a leading podcast provider. However, this was before online content streaming services come into being. Today, there are a host of dedicated podcast apps, yet Apple is believed to be driving 50 to 70 percent of all available podcasts downloads, according to Nieman Lab. Today’s milestone is another evidence of the Apple Podcasts thriving.
