As the day draws to an end, among the headline grabbers today were Apple, Google and Xiaomi. Apple confirmed the acquisition Shazam, while an alleged render of a cheaper iPhone X also surfaced online. The Google Pixel 2 XL is now at Rs 64,999 as part of ‘Best Buy’ offer. There were also reports doing the rounds about Xiaomi’s expansion plans in India by investing in electric vehicles, payments space. Let’s see how the day turned out to be.

Apple-Shazam acquisition

Apple confirmed today that it will buy Shazam, and is pending approval from their side. While the details about the acquisition were not disclosed, reports suggest that the price is around $400 million. If true, this will be Apple’s largest acquisitions ever. There is no word yet on what the acquisition looks like from Shazam’s end. However, the company has been working closely with Spotify, allowing users to add songs to Spotify playlists, and to listen to Spotify music directly from Shazam’s app.

Google Pixel 2 XL

Google has announced a temporary price cut for the Pixel 2 XL in India. The smartphone is now retailing at Rs 64,999 for the 64GB variant, and Rs 73,999 for the 128GB storage. The promotional “Best Buy” pricing will be applicable to both cards as well as cash transactions at authorized offline retailers across the country.

Xiaomi India expansion plans

In a move to strengthen its portfolio in India, Xiaomi is planning to foray into electric vehicles, payments space in India. In a filing with Registrar of Companies (RoC), the company has mentioned that it aspires to sell “all types of vehicles for transport, conveyance and other transport equipment, whether based on electricity or any other motive or mechanical power, including the components, spare parts”. The filing further says it plans “to carry on the business of non-banking financial companies, payments bank, leasing and financing, other financial services, payment gateway and settlement systems operators, mobile virtual network operators”.

Apple iPhone Xc

Concept renders of what is said to be the Apple iPhone Xc was spotted online today. The smartphone is said to be a direct successor to the iPhone 5c. The iPhone Xc will have an iPhone X-like notch on the front, but the device will be constructed out of plastic. Basically, it will be a version of the Apple iPhone X but at a much cheaper price. The leak further suggested that that smartphone could use an LCD panel instead of OLED to cut costs.

Synaptics Clear ID FS9500 fingerprint sensors

Synaptics has announced the launch of world’s first in-display fingerprint sensor with a ‘top 5’ smartphone OEM. The hardware manufacturer announced its plans to mass produce an optical in-display fingerprint sensor. The new “Clear ID FS9500” fingerprint sensor is designed for smartphones with near-bezel-free displays, and provides fingerprint authentication on demand completely within the display panel itself.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3

Xiaomi has recently launched the Mi MIX 2 smartphone, and there are already rumors of its successor – Mi MIX 3. However, if the latest image leak is to be believed, the new Mi Mix 3 will have rounded corners and a dual-camera setup. This dual-camera will be placed vertically, similar to the iPhone X. The fingerprint scanner is placed at the center. Under the fingerprint scanner, the panel has “Mi MIC Designed by Xiaomi” written on it.
