On Tuesday the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Apple a patent titled, “Electronic device having display with curved edges.” The name describes a technology used to design circular displays, which we believe can be featured on Apple’s smartwatch. The design also references a wristwatch in one of its illustrations.
The patent also talks more about the challenges in designing a circular display and how to overcome some of the issues. It describes how a rectangular pixel array will not fit in a device with a circular frame. Furthermore, it also goes on to explain how Apple plans on working around that problem.
Though Apple Watch is our best guess, the patent also hints at using the technology in a smaller device, compared to a watch. This could include a wearable, like a pendant or headphones. Based on rumors about Apple working on AR and VR headsets, there is a good chance that the technology can be featured in their smartglasses too. It is also something that the patent suggests.

Of course, there is a good chance that we might not get to see a product based on the patent at all. Apple is known to apply for a ton of patents that they never actually got through with. However, there is a good chance that Apple might have been enticed by its Android competition. Also, knowing that Apple already has a plan set for designing a circular display, we might get to see a round-faced Apple Watch. Would you like to see Apple come up with a circular Apple Watch?
