Asus has launched a new variant of the Zenfone 5 in India called the Zenfone 5 A501. The smartphone is priced at Rs 7,999 and has gone on sale via Asus’ stores and Flipkart.

The original Zenfone 5 was launched in India for Rs 9,999 and there is very little that differentiates the two variants. The new variant is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 dual-core processor, instead of the 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2560 dual-core processor, powering the original Zenfone 5. Additionally in what seems a way to keep the costs down, the company isn’t bundling any headset either.

The rest of the specifications remain the same, so in essence the smartphone flaunts a 5-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, 2GB of RAM, and 8GB internal storage that can be further expanded up to 64GB using a microSD card.

The smartphone also features an 8-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 2,110mAh battery that the company claims is good enough for 18 hours of talktime and 353 hours on standby mode. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots, 3G support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and on the software front it runs on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but is upgradable to 4.4 KitKat.

Facing the heat from the likes of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and the Yu Yureka, Asus recently launched the 16GB variant of the Zenfone 5 in India. While the company amped up the storage capacity, it kept the price at Rs 9,999.

Additionally, towards the end of last year, the company also launched the Zenfone 5 Lite variant in India priced at Rs 8,999. The Lite variant features a 5-inch qHD IPS display, 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 dual-core processor, paired with 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of expandable internal storage. The dual-SIM capable Zenfone 5 Lite supports 3G, and Wi-Fi. It has an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, and VGA snapper upfront, and a 2,500mAh battery. The phone runs on Android 4.4 KitKat with Zen UI on top. In essence, with better set of specifications and lower price tag, the new Zenfone 5 variant makes much more sense than the Zenfone 5 Lite.
