Baba Ramdev’s Kimbho, the Indian rival to messaging application WhatsApp, is set to make a comeback to Google Play Store. After partnership with BSNL to launch Patanjali SIM cards, Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balkrishna, announced a social messaging app called Kimbho. In Sanskrit, Kimbho is used to ask about the well-being of any person.

As soon as the app went live on Google Play Store, it was downloaded multiple times before French security researcher Elliot Alderson raised concerns about the application. Soon, the app received a lot of negative feedback for its shady security practice and bad user interface. The app was immediately taken down from the Play Store by its creators and even its website became inaccessible.

However, Acharya Balkrishna, the Indian billionaire CEO of Patanjali, is planning to bring the app back. “We pledge not to launch the app until a team of expert hackers and security specialists plug all the security and privacy loopholes,” Balkrishna told Bloomberg in a phone interview.

A day before it disappeared from the Play Store, Kimbho had been installed nearly 3 lakh times. Since its launch, the app has been termed as a joke and security disaster by those in the technology sector. There were also separate reports stating that the demand for the app was so huge that its servers crashed as soon as Android users started installing the application.

With the updated version of Kimbho, Balkrishna says it will focus primarily on the messaging aspect of social network. The app, soon after its launch, was seen as the immediate threat to WhatsApp, which has over 200 million monthly active users in the country. It would be interesting to see whether Kimbho becomes a success and manages to beat WhatsApp when it fixes the issues that plagued it in the first place.
