It was an eventful week for the tech industry where we saw some major announcements. It started with the launch of  the Google Tez app, which is said to be the ‘made for India’ version of Android Pay, based on UPI. The launch was followed by the availability of Samsung Galaxy Note 8 up for pre-order on Amazon India. The shipping for the smartphone has already begun for customers who pre-booked the device earlier. Apart from that, OnePlus, with an aim to strengthen its offline market has made its flagship OnePlus 5 available in India via Croma stores. The pre-Diwali sales on various e-commerce sites and Apple iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus available for pre-order in India followed in the week. Here’s a closer look at the top stories of the week.

Google Tez app

Taking another step forward in India’s digital transformation, Google entered into the digital payment market with the launch of its Tez app. The app is available for users on Android and iOS and comes with support to UPI. It supports banks including Axis, HDFC Bank, ICICI and State Bank of India, among others. The tech giant also announced that new devices from Micromax, Lava, Nokia, and Panasonic will ship with Tez pre-installed. Tez also supports online payment partners which include Dominos, RedBus, and Jet Airways. With the app, you can transfer money using a UPI address or the Tez UPI address to anyone who has a UPI-supported bank account. However, a user can transfer amounts only exceeding Rs 50, and anything below that will not be acceptable. The app is set to face fierce competition from the likes of other mobile wallet players like Alibaba’s Paytm and Flipkart‘s PhonePe. Apple is also in the news to launch its Apple Pay service in India by the end of the year.
