Vivo X20 UD Plus launch CES 2018

Vivo will launch the world’s first smartphone with in-display fingerprint sensor at CES 2018 on January 10. After showcasing a prototype version of the device at Mobile World Congress in Shanghai last year, the Chinese smartphone maker is set to unveil the final device tomorrow.

Vivo has posted a teaser image with the tagline “Unlock the Future” indicating the launch of a device with in-screen fingerprint sensor. The smartphone could be the X20 Plus UD model which received 3C certification last week. The UD moniker in the naming of Vivo X20 Plus suggested the use of an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Vivo has demonstrated how a smartphone with an under-display fingerprint sensor would function at MWC Shanghai in June last year. The company relied on technology from Qualcomm, but the final product might use an in-display sensor from Synaptics. Synaptics launched its Clear ID FS9500, an in-screen fingerprint sensor that has now entered mass production and Vivo confirmed that it will use Synaptics’ fingerprint sensor on its future devices.

The sensor developed by Synaptics is capable of recognising fingerprints even through an OLED panel. In terms of specifications, the X20 Plus UD is expected to feature the same aluminum unibody metal design with 18:9 AMOLED display like its siblings X20 and X20 Plus variants.

The smartphone could be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset along with Adreno 512 GPU and option for either 4GB or 6GB RAM. The Vivo X20 Plus UD will likely retain the 24-megapixel selfie camera found on regular X20 and X20 Plus models. It should also feature dual rear camera setup with 24-megapixel primary sensor and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor.

Vivo and other Chinese smartphone makers have been dominating the smartphone industry for the past few years. While they were called as copycats when they started selling smartphones, the companies have caught up big time when it comes to innovation. Chinese smartphone maker Huawei pioneered dual cameras while Oppo showed 5x optical zoom feature at MWC last year. With the launch of first smartphone with in-screen fingerprint sensor, Vivo will also join the frey.
