AMD has just taken Computex 2018 by storm by announcing a new 32-core chip. This new 32-core chip is the second generation on its Threadripper lineup, and can handle 64 threads. This new announcement comes mere hours after Intel teased its 28-core chip that will be clocked at 5.0GHz. The company announced that Threadripper 2 will launch in the third quarter of this year, which is a couple of weeks before Intel’s offering.

The company also revealed some details about this new chip by adding that the chip will run on its 12nm Zen+ architecture. This is the same architecture that is used in the latest Ryzen CPUs that AMD launched for desktops as reported by AnandTech. The company claimed that this new architecture will allow Threadripper 2 to come with similar features including improved boost, higher clock speed, and increase in efficiency during the performance. AMD confirmed that Threadripper 2 will be able to fit on the same motherboard socket as the first generation of Threadripper so that users don’t need to buy a new motherboard if they want to just upgrade to the second generation chip.

It looks like AMD is ready to counter Intel with this latest offering as it has doubled the number of cores and threads in the second generation as compared to the first generation chip. The company has assigned “Colfax” as the code name to this new chip lineup, and the 32-core chip will be clocked at 3.4GHz.

This is not the only thing that AMD revealed during its keynote presentation at Computex 2018 in Taipei. It also revealed a 7nm Vega GPU during its presentation that will ship later this year. This new GPU will come with 32GB of memory along with AI-chops.
