Amazon Echo Dot and Fire TV stick were the best-selling devices in any category during the holiday season, the company said on Tuesday. The e-commerce giant said this year marked its biggest holiday season yet with record level shopping from customers around the world.
Amazon is not sharing the exact number of Alexa-enabled devices it sold during the holiday season, but confirmed that Echo Dot was the best selling product from any manufacturer in any category with millions of units sold. It adds that customers purchased twice as many Amazon Fire TV sticks compared to last year’s holiday season. “Fire TV continues to be the #1 streaming media player family in the US, UK, Germany and Japan across all retailers,” Amazon said in a released statement.
Amazon has a market share of over 70 percent in the smart speaker space, and its Echo devices continue to outsell similar products from Google and others. The Echo Dot, priced at $29.99, is out of stock, and it won’t ship until January 1. Amazon says customers can still pre-order to reserve their device and orders will be fulfilled on a first come, first served basis.
Amazon Devices were not the only major draw this holiday season, Prime membership also saw healthy growth. Amazon says more than four million people started Prime free trials or began paid membership in one week alone. The Prime membership benefit includes free two-day, one-day or same-day shipping and it also offers ultra-fast one and two hour delivery with Prime Now.
Amazon says its peak day of customer fulfillment in 2017 was December 19 and more one billion items were ordered from small businesses and entrepreneurs worldwide this season. From Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, Amazon saw 140 million items ordered from small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Mobile trumped desktop with the e-commerce giant fulfilling more orders through its mobile app this holiday season. Amazon says worldwide customer shopping on the Amazon App increased nearly 70 percent this holiday season. It notes that more than 1,400 electronics products were ordered per second on a mobile device during this holiday season.
There is no doubt that Amazon won Christmas this year, but the bigger star was Alexa voice assistant. Alexa was the top app on Android and iOS during Christmas day and millions of Prime members shopped with voice for gifts while Amazon Music playback with Alexa grew four times.
