Essential has conceded that the camera on last year’s Essential Phone was lacklustre. However it promises to improve on that this year. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Essential’s head of industrial design Linda Jiang said that it has heard the feedback from customers about the camera, and that it is working to improve on that area with the upcoming flagship.
“In general, one thing that we got hit hard with was the quality of our camera, and we’re really looking forward to improving that with our next-gen, making sure that we’re listening to our customers and their pain points …We’re going to make it better for you,” says Jiang.
In the interview, Jiang did not talk about when we could expect to see the Essential Phone 2 in the market. However, as per media reports, a launch from Essential is expected this May.
Besides, the interview also had a mention of Jiang promising that any accessories that customers may have bought with the first-generation phone will all remain to be compatible with the upcoming model. This means that you can expect all the ports remaining as they are.
Further, Jiang mentions that the company is looking at different types of coatings and textures to make the Essential Phone 2 less slippery and prone to fingerprints.
Before the launch of the Essential Phone in 2017, the brand got a lot of attention in the market, especially considering the that company is backed by the Android creator Andy Rubin. However, post launch, the Essential Phone did not see a very successful graph. It’s glory was almost entirely taken over by the Google Pixel 2 duo, Galaxy S8 duo, the Galaxy Note 8, and the iPhone X.
In fact, IDC research director Francisco Jeronimo has tweeted saying that Essential Phone shipped just about 90,000 units in 2017. That sales estimate is rather grim for a phone that was initially seen as an alternative to the iPhone. And the area where the smartphone lost most points was the camera.
