Face ID will be integrated on all 2018 Apple iPhone models: KGI Securities

Apple replaced the Touch ID on the iPhone X with Face ID for biometric authentication.

Apple introduced a new biometric authentication system for the iPhone this year. Replacing the Touch ID, the high-end iPhone X features Face ID. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which were also launched with the iPhone X, do not come with the Face ID feature. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo however claims that Apple will integrate Face ID on all the 2018 iPhones.

Kuo’s report highlights how Apple’s facial recognition system will possibly continue with all the iPhone models in 2018, 9to5Mac reports. However, the possibility of this technology evolving would strongly depend on how consumers utilize it. If the Face ID on the iPhone X receives good response then Apple could further develop the TrueDepth front camera for Face ID on all its iPhone models. A TrueDepth camera will allow Apple to create different applications, Face ID being only one of them.

Kuo again highlights how important the consumer’s response is on Face ID. As the iPhone X launched, all attention was obviously drawn towards the Face ID. The day started with hilarious reactions on the Face ID, which turned serious later as security issues were questioned. Analysts and experts opined how Face ID can be compromised as it collects one’s sensitive data. A US Senator himself wrote to Tim Cook raising concerns on how Face ID will affect an iPhone user’s privacy and security. However, Apple states that the data collected by Face ID never leaves the device, is encrypted, and protected by the Secure Enclave. The Secure Enclave is also where the Touch ID is protected. If Face ID fails to garner enough attention and response, Apple could move on to developing the under-display Touch ID. The iPhone X was heavily rumored to feature the Touch ID sensor embedded underneath the display. Apple will start shipping the iPhone X in November, and after a fair time of usage we would know how the Face ID fares.
