Facebook crosses 1.86 billion monthly active users, 1.23 billion daily active users in Q4, 2016

Facebook on course to hit 2 billion monthly active users this year following an impressive fourth quarter.

The Facebook juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing down, and in fact it is picking up pace. The company announced its fourth quarter earnings, and it has yet again beat analysts’ expectations for revenues and user growth. What’s interesting though is for the first time ever, the most number of daily active users for Facebook are from Asia.

Facebook recorded 1.23 billion daily active users in Q4, 2016, which marks an 18 percent increase year-over-year. Of these, 396 million users are based out of Asia, which is the highest for Facebook. In comparison, the company has 180 million daily users in US and Canada, 262 million users in Europe, and 388 million in ‘rest of the world’. In fact, Facebook’s user base in Asia has risen by 57 percent in the past two years, which far outpaces growth anywhere else. The number of daily active users who access Facebook on mobile devices is steadily on a rise as well. In Q4, Facebook recorded 1.15 billion daily active users on mobile, which marks an increase of 23 percent year-over-year.

These numbers are anything but surprising, as countries like India are of huge importance to Facebook. The Mark Zuckerberg-led company has admitted this time and again, and has also taken various steps to ensure users in these countries get the best possible experience. Riddled with iffy network connections, Facebook has launched lite app that is light in terms of storage, and also can work on 2G connections. It is also working hard to bring internet connectivity to remote corners of emerging nations with the use of drones. As for its overall user base, Facebook is on par to touch the 2 billion milestone this year. Facebook announced a monthly active user base of 1.86 billion, marking an increase of 17 percent year-over-year. Users accessing the social network on mobiles touched 1.74 billion, which marks an increase of 21 percent year-over-year.

As for revenues, Facebook reported net income of $10.2 billion, which is a massive 177 percent growth year-over-year. Overall revenues touched $27.6 billion, which is a 54.2 percent increase year-over-year.
