E-commerce giant Flipkart has just announced the launch of a new service “Flipkart Supermart”. According to the announcement, this is an online grocery store, and it currently only available in Bengaluru. Flipkart is planning to expand this new service to “5-6 major cities” by the end of 2018.
Interested users can access “Flipkart Supermart” through any of the existing platforms including apps for iOS, Android, mobile website or even desktop. The company added that its product lineup as part of the Supermart includes staples, dairy products, and fast moving consumer goods such as packaged food.
The company claims that this new service has been “built from scratch” to ensure that all the grocery-specific needs of the user are addressed. Flipkart added that the reason to enter the groceries market was that online shopping only accounts for about 0.5 percent in the groceries industry in India. This may not seem much, but the company added that groceries market accounts to about $400 billion or 70 percent of the total retail market in the country. Flipkart pointed out that it will focus on the quality of products, convenience, and the savings that its users can make.

The company also added that it has set up a dedicated cost-efficient supply chain for groceries that includes new warehouses, and last-mile delivery network. Flipkart is also introducing its private label “Flipkart Supermart Select” for staples.
Manish Kumar, the Head of Groceries at Flipkart added, “With Flipkart Supermart we have solved for problems of assured quality, savings, and convenience to create an unmatched offering.
