Freedom 251 hands-on photos revealed, looks inspired by Apple's iPhone

Freedom 251 in real-life looks nothing like the renders on its website. Some hands-on photos have surfaced online showing a design and UI heavily inspired by Apple's iPhones.

The much-talked about Freedom 251, priced at Rs 251, is set to be officially launched later today. With a few hours to the event though, the first set of hands-on photos have started surfacing online. The first thing that you notice is that the actual smartphone looks nothing like the renders Ringing Bells has used on Freedom 251’s official website.

These hands-on photos shared by ET’s Technology Editor, Hitesh Raj Bhagat, show that the Freedom 251 actually looks like a very cheap iPhone knockoff. You get a familiar rounded form factor, as well as a physical back button that looks like iPhone’s TouchID sensor. If the inspired design wasn’t enough, the icons also seem to have been borrowed from iOS. The dialer app, camera, calculator, clock, browser, and messages all seem to have been directly copied from iOS.

A little digging around also revealed that the Freedom 251 could be a rebranded Adcom Ikon 4. The Ikon 4 is listed on e-commerce sites like Flipkart with a price tag of Rs 4,081. There are however a few differences on the features front. The Adcom branding is present so it is clearly a repackaged device, which has been substantially subsidized to hit the Rs 251 price point. At this price, though, we can’t complain much. After all, it is the world’s cheapest smartphone. At this point, we also don’t know who is subsidizing the smartphone.
