Smartwatch shipments across the globe have reportedly reached 1.9 million units with Android recording 61 percent market share. Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics said that the smartwatch market was beginning to take shape and compared the present figures with 2012’s when only a few hundred thousand units were shipped. Mawston said that today there is quite a big gap between what smartwatches cost and what most people are willing to pay.
According to Tech Hive, for smartwatches to achieve the same usage success as smartphones and tablets, almost everything about them has to improve, including the hardware and the surrounding ecosystems of apps. Prices also have to come down. Meanwhile, Strategy Analytics stated that the 1.9 million smartwatches manufacturers shipped last year was in comparison to 227 million tablets and 990 million smartphones.
