Google Earth did not uncover Atlantis, after all

When Google launched its Google Ocean extension for Google Earth back in 2009, numerous rumors about the lost city of Atlantis started surfacing. Many noticed a grid like pattern on the seafloor. It turns out the that extension was merely transmitting a data artifact that the sonar method oceanographers used to map the seafloor.  Last Week Google updated the software with the latest seafloor data from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of California, and looks like the Atlantis artifact has now been eliminated. According to the NOAA, overlapping datasets caused the problem with the original Google Oceans map.
