Google Earth, which underwent a major overhaul earlier this year, will allow users to post photos, videos and stories in the next 2-3 years. Google Earth’s Voyager (its storytelling platform) already allows uses to access curated content and take interactive tours of exotic destinations. Going ahead, users can create their own unedited content for private or public use. “The story of your family history, the story of your favorite hiking trip – it could be anything. It doesn’t have to be profound,” Google Earth Director Rebecca Moore told Reuters.
Google Earth is hugely popular with internet surfers and travel enthusiasts. After its latest product update, it offers advanced data import capabilities, more sophisticated measurement tools, higher-resolution printing, movie creation, and more. Google Earth recently unveiled its ‘I am the Amazon’ project, which maps 11 sites to chronicle the relationship between Brazil’s iconic Amazon rain forests and the locals, their lives, cultural origins, etc. Most of these stories are told by the diverse communities who call the forest home. “They create an immersive web and mobile experience told through video, mapping, audio and 360° virtual reality, covering a broad range of issues facing the future of the rain forest—and, consequently, the planet,” a Google blog post said.
Despite all its ambitions, Google Earth continues to be an ad-free platform and is fuelled by Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) other money-making operations. “Google Earth is our gift to the world. In terms of budget, Google has nice revenue from advertising, and not everything Google does has to make money,” Moore reportedly said.
