Google could be gearing to compete with Amazon Echo Show with its own Google Home with a screen.

Artificial Intelligence or AI-based voice assistants are not just limited to smartphones as tech giants have started making smart speakers and other similar products. And while voice may be the next big thing in computing, the displays aren’t going away anytime soon. Amazon has its range of Alexa-powered speakers, and an Echo Show with a touchscreen display. Google has its Google Home smart speakers, and the search giant is also reportedly working on a smart speaker with a screen.

Google and Lenovo have already partnered to create their own smart speaker with a display, and it uses the new Smart Display platform. JBL, Sony and LG are also using the platform for making similar devices, and besides smart speaker functions, it supports YouTube video playback too. However, these are products made by other companies, and Google is looking to make its own smart speaker with a display, VP Rishi Chandra hinted about the same in an interview with Variety.

“It’s an emerging category. I’m not saying we are not going to do it,” Chandra said. He did not reveal any other details about the product, what Google will call it or when it will arrive. However, Chandra did mention that Home is critical for Google.

“The simple truth is we need to become a must-have product,” he added. Chandra also admitted the fact that Google Home products powered by Google Assistant are still not quite meeting the bar. As of now, Google Home products offer some useful functionality, but it isn’t something that people would rely on for their daily needs. “I’m looking for daily-use cases,” Chandra added.

It is clear, Google is working hard to integrate its IoT products into Home experience, whether it is Nest products, smart speakers or Chromecast streaming devices. We can expect Google to shed light on what it has been working on, either at I/O 2018 or at October event when the company introduces new Pixel smartphones.
