Just like last year, even this year, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning has been the key highlight of the Google I/O 2018 annual developer conference. Google has already talked about new AI-based features coming to Gmail and Google Photos app. Now, the search giant is also revamping the Google News app with Material Theme and AI capabilities.
”I think there is more great journalism produced today than ever before,” Sundar Pichai said at the keynote. And with people turning to Google for information, the new Google News app will focus on three features – keeping up with the latest news, understanding full story and supporting sources that you love. The app is completely redesigned with Material Theme, and the homepage will offer you top 5 stories when you open the app.
The new Google News app will feature top stories, local news and YouTube videos. The app will use reinforcement learning, a type of AI training technique to understand user behavior. There is also a new media format called Newscasts exclusive to Google News. There are four tabs – for you, headlines, favorites and newsstand. There are 1,000 magazines includes, and a new feature called Subscribe with Google.
Google has built the app with 60 publishers from across the globe, and all your subscribed magazines will be linked with the Google Account, meaning it will be available across all devices. The updated app is rolling out to Android and iOS devices, and the web in 127 countries starting today. The app will be available to everybody by the end of next week.
