Google began bringing all of its different payment tools under the Google Pay brand last month. On Android, however, the company stuck with the older Android Pay branding as its default payment service. That changes today with the release of a new Google Pay app for Android.
Google has started rolling out an update to Android Pay, and it is also available as a standalone app on the Play Store. Alongside the change in branding, the app also brings new features like ability to pay in stores as well as leading websites. With Google Pay, the search giant believes that it has a payment platform that will help compete against Apple Pay.
Google Pay app is basically a redesign of the existing Android Pay app, but it gets Google’s own Material Design with minimalistic user interface. The app does not bring a lot of new features, but the homescreen of Google Pay app shows all the relevant stores around you where one can pay with Google Pay. It populates those details based on previous stores where you have used the service and according to your current location. The homescreen also shows all of your recent purchases, and there is an option to connect all of your loyalty cards to the app.
“With Google Pay, it’ll be easier for you to use the payment information saved to your Google Account, so you can speed through checkout with peace of mind. Over the coming weeks, you’ll see Google Pay online, in store, and across Google products, as well as when you’re paying friends,” Pali Bhat, VP of Product Management, Payments said in a blog post.
Google says users can set up Google Pay right from their bank app wherever it is supported and online app or website can also add support for Google Pay by calling in a Google API in their codebase. Google is also launching a redesign of the Google Wallet app for sending and requesting money and it is now called Google Pay Send.
In the US and UK, Google Pay itself will soon support the option to send and receive money. New users can download the Google Pay app today while existing Android Pay users will get updated to new version over the next few days.
