Post demonetization, it was like Christmas came early for all e-wallets and digital payments applications, especially Paytm. However, the sparkle of wallets soon started to fade and these platforms had to do more to stay in the game. So, last year in November, Paytm rolled out its instant messaging service called, Paytm Inbox. So now, it not only lets you transact and transfer money, shop online and pay bills, but it also lets you chat. Months later, messaging platform WhatsApp announced that it is integrating UPI-based payment solution to its app.
That naturally brought WhatsApp and Paytm into a head-to-head contest. Adding to the existing competition, Google has now added an in-app chat feature into its relatively new payment app, Google Tez.
BGR India reached out to Google regarding the same and a company spokesperson confirmed saying, “We’ve added a feature to Tez that allows you to send simple messages back and forth to your contacts about the payments you make.”
Google apparenlty is already in the process of of rolling out the chat option for all of Tez’ users, across all platforms. Google Tez currently has 13.5 million active users. As Google has revealed, the chat feature will allow users to start conversations around the transactions within the app itself. The option, however, is not yet available to all Google Tez users as the company is rolling it out in phases.
Like we mentioned, the rollout of the feature brings Google Tez neck-to-neck with WhatsApp, which is currently running a pilot of its payments feature in India. Some Android and iOS users of WhatsApp have even started to see the feature on their app, but the money transfers haven’t been enabled yet.
