In September last year, Google launched its mobile wallet app, Google Tez, for digital payments. The UPI (Unified Payments Interface) based app enables peer-to-peer payments, allowing you to send and receive money from other users of the app. Google has now updated the app by adding utility bill payment option as well.
With the latest update, you can now pay for your electricity bills, with billers such as BEST Mumbai, Ajmer Vidyut Vitran, Bharatpur Electricity, Bhagalpur Electricity, BSES Rajdhani and Yamuna, MSEDC, Torrent Power and Noida Power among others. You can also pay your MTNL Mumbai and Delhi landline bills, ACT broadband, Airtel landline and broadband, postpaid bill payments to Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Docomo and others.
What’s more, you can also make gas and life insurance premium payments using the app, or refill your DTH accounts such as Dish TV or Tata Sky. Sadly, as of now, prepaid mobile recharge is not supported by Google Tez.
How to make utility bill payment using Google Tez
To begin with, open Google Tez app, at tap on ‘New’ with the Rupee icon in the ‘Payments’ section at the bottom. Here, you will see some suggested businesses, and Tez connections – which has options to send money using Account Number, UPI ID and Pay Bills. Tap on “Pay your bills” and select the biller from the list.
For instance, if you want to make your BEST Mumbai electricity bill payment, select it from the list and link your account. Here, you will have to enter your consumer number and give it some name for easy reference. Once the details are verified, it will fetch your bill details, and if the latest bill is generated, it will show you the latest amount, followed by bill date and bill details.
When you tap on pay bill, it will ask you to select between the linked bank accounts, followed by entering the 4-digit UPI PIN linked to that bank account for authentication. Once that is done, your payment will be completed. Similarly, you can add other billers too.
Utility bill payment option is in addition to existing payment service that lets you send money to bank accounts using bank account number and IFSC, or via UPI ID (VPA – Virtual Payment Address), or using QR code. Google Tez also supports audio-based QR system that emits sound from sender’s phone, and the receiver’s phone will then fetch information without having to enter phone number or any other details. It is more like NFC tap and pay, but in this case, information is sent using audio.
