After Samsung and Apple have laid down their cards, Google is next in line to reveal the second generation of its Pixel phones. The company is scheduled to host an event on October 4 where it will launch the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, along with a Home Mini, and Pixelbook. However, if the latest rumor is to be believed, Google will also be launching a premium smartphone called the ‘Ultra Pixel’ at the event.
This latest rumor comes from a YouTube video uploaded by Arun Maini, a tech vlogger. In the video he talks about an email that he received from an anonymous source, which contained images and videos that supposedly reveal an alleged Pixel Ultra phone.
The image that reveals the purported Ultra Pixel smartphone is actually a picture of a laptop’s display showing off what looks like a promo image for the smartphone. It says in clear words, “Ultra Pixel. Phone by Google”, however because of a lot of haze in the image, it is hard to read the details. Though we can tell it is a near edge-to-edge display. It’s actually quite similar to what we are expecting from the Google Pixel 2 XL. ALSO READ: Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL leaked yet again ahead of October 4 launch
Further, the vlogger also reveals in his video that the Ultra Pixel will sport a dual-camera assembly, which is something we’re not expecting in the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL. Along with that, he says, there will be a “new kind of fingerprint scanner”. Though those words do not really reveal any detail, but to make a guess, it could be a fingerprint scanner embedded under the display, how we were expecting one in the new iPhones, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Another interesting revelation this video claims to make is the alleged absence of Android’s back, home, and recent navigation buttons on the Ultra Pixel, in favor of a system that’s based purely on gestures. Another photo that Maini received shows a swipe up gesture on the Ultra Pixel to access the phone’s multitasking screen, and in another instance, we see a screenshot of three phones next to each other with the text “The future of Android is Fluid”. Now if you think about it, this supposed strategy of a premium smartphone in addition to the expected successors, seems quite similar to what Apple did this time with the iPhone X. Where Apple completed ten years of iPhones, Google too celebrated its 19th birthday. Having said that, it is quite likely that all of this is a mockup, and it does not really come true at the day of the event. Which means, we have got to wait and watch until the October 4 arrives, and Google makes it all official. Follow this space for bumper to bumper updates on the same.
