Government is planning to talk to ride-sharing companies such as Ola and Uber to ask them to offer new features to their users. These new features include allowing women passengers to choose their ride-sharing partners or even an “exclusive women pooling” option to improve security. According to a report by Hindustan Times, discussions regarding women safety have taken center stage in the aftermath of incidents where cab drivers or co-passengers harassed or assaulted women passengers. This comes days after a case of “alleged molestation” of a women passenger where an Ola driver forced the passenger to strip, took pictures of her on his mobile phone and threatened her with gang-rape while en-route to the airport.

The report stated that Union road transport and highways ministry is planning to call a meeting of all the taxi aggregators and ride-sharing companies to discuss what can be done. This comes right after another meeting that was held on Wednesday where officials from Ministry of Women and Child Development met with the officials from Road Transport and Highways to discuss the issue of increasing criminal reports and cases of assault and harassment. The option of choosing the ride-sharing partner and other exclusive pooling modes were not discussed in the previous meeting.

While talking to the Hindustan Times, the Uber spokesperson went on to add, “We believe that technologies like Uber provide an incredible opportunity to improve the safety of riders and driver partners in new and innovative ways — before, during and after every ride.”

As part of the previous meeting, both the ministries added that companies such as Uber and Ola should work on a “foolproof” workaround to track any diversion in the route. They also quizzed these companies on what steps they take while recruiting new drivers for their service.
